Do vitamins/supplements really have a shelf life?

I have some GNC purchased vitamins, for weightlifting, but have not used them in apprx. 6 months, due to an injury. Looking at the bottle there is an expiration date. How can a vitamin go bad? Is this just a ploy to get the consumer to use/purchase more in a timely manner? FYI, the product is Acetabolan III.
