Melatonin Supplements
A number of alternative treatments are available for treating insomnia. Many people are troubled by the potential side-effects of prescription drugs to treat their insomnia, and would like to use a natural treatment with fewer side effects. When sleep problems are not severe, a melatonin supplement may be a good choice.
Melatonin is a substance that is produced naturally by the pineal gland in the brain in response to lowered light conditions. The pineal gland is the connection between the neuronal networks of the visual centers in the brain and the eyes. Melatonin helps to synchronize our internal clock with the light outside. Melatonin is naturally synthesized from the amino acid L-Tryptophan (abundant in turkey meat and rice). When melatonin levels rise in the blood, our body will become drowsy and lowers its temperature.
As we grow older, our bodies produce less melatonin. Add to that a busy lifestyle with stress and many things to worry about and you have conditions that are favorable for developing insomnia.
During the Summer and particularly at more Northern latitudes, people may find it difficult to fall asleep due to increased daylight. Also, people who travel frequently may develop insomnia due to a change in melatonin production.
Taking a melatonin supplement may help synchronize our internal clock. Melatonin can easily be synthesized and people only need a small dose between 1 and 3 mg taken right before bedtime to fall asleep. Adequate levels of vitamin B6 are required for melatonin to work properly, so choose melatonin supplements that also contain vitamin B6.
Research has suggested that a number of children with autism spectrum disorders suffer from disturbances in sleep and that when these children were given melatonin, an improvement in their sleep patterns and behavior was noted. Parents who are interested in giving their children melatonin, should always consult with their pediatrician first.
A number of clinical studies have suggested that melatonin supplementation can help in preventing cluster headaches and migraines. Melatonin has been shown to stimulate the production of leptin (hormone which regulates appetite) in the presence of insulin. The increased levels of leptin during the night, results in a lowered appetite while we’re asleep.
If you insomnia has become a problem for you, then taking melatonin supplements is one treatment option. Although melatonin is relatively safe, there are a few side effects you should be aware of, such as slower reaction times and drowsiness. Also note that pregnant women should not take melatonin. If your insomnia is severe, there may be additional insomnia treatments available by prescription. It is always a good idea to discuss any health concerns you have with your doctor.
